The Pitbull is a wonderful dog. There are many factors that make this animal less desirable to the greater community at large, and more desirable to a group who continues to propagate negativity surrounding this breed.

The Pit was originally bred to be a fighting dog. No bones (get it?) about it. HOWEVER, they were bred to fight bears, bulls, and other dogs. They came about as immigrants struggled to find a pastime in the early 1800's. Collectively they bred dogs with characteristics that met the requirement of attacking and bringing down a bull or bear. This included dogs such as the bulldog, mastiff, and bull terrier among others. They found that shorter dogs did well as they were able to elude the mouths of the opponent. The faster dogs could run away from the attack, and the stronger dogs obviously did better against a stronger opponent. Eventually, these dogs began to take on a similar look and the breed was continued with the best of the fighting dogs. In time, they fights were between the dogs themselves, and thus the American Pitbull Terrier was born.

The biggest part of this story, and perhaps the most important is that they were never, ever bred to harm humans. In fact, even at the inception of the breed, any dog that showed propensity for aggression towards humans was killed. This was mainly due to the close quarters that were shared among the dogs. They would not be able to live in a home with a dog that would be likely to attack them. It wasn't until recently that the breed was subject to bad breeding that created some of the dogs that are in existence today.

Today, everyone thinks they are going to make a buck. They see ads in the newspaper asking for hundreds of dollars for a pup. With this information, and ignorance in tow backyard breeders cropped up. With no knowledge of breed standards, how to weed out aggression, and dollar signs in their eyes a slough of dogs has been born to these people. In the midst of this, it became glorified in some circles to have a mean, aggressive, unpredictable dog. This alone created the mess that these innocent dogs have to deal with. Yet they have no voice to fight for them. We must be their voice.

A true Pitbull will not hurt you. A true Pitbull will be the love of your life, and love you in return.
